Why do the seasons change?
The changing of the seasons is caused by two very important factors – the rotation of the Earth that gives us days and nights, and the Earth orbiting around the Sun that defines the lenght of our years. The Earth's orbit around the Sun is elliptical, and the planet's axis (an imaginary line through its centre, around which it is rotating) is not perpendicular to, but tilted at an angle to its orbit. As the Earth orbits, the two hemispheres alternately get closer to the Sun. The hemisphere tilting towards the Sun experiences summer, while on the opposite hemisphere, tilting away from the Sun, there is winter.
